Will you help rescue his friends?

Meet Charlie

Hi, I’m Charlie.

This dog rescue organization is named after me.

My sister and I were in cages, sleeping on a cold concrete floor and getting lousy food.  It was crowded and they had to make room because more dogs were coming.

If we hadn’t been rescued, things would not have ended well for us.

Some of my friends are in the same terrible situation and they need help.

Will you help me save my friends?

Let’s make sure they get a new life in a warm and loving home.

Save a life.  Adopt one of my friends.

Lets go!

Can you please hurry?

My friends are waiting!

Is it OK if I drive?

More Dogs and Puppies coming in early November

2019 has been a huge success - lots of Rescue dogs adopted!

Charlie (with help from humans) rescued lots of his friends so far this year.  They are very happy dogs now that they have been adopted by their new families.  Scroll down to see the dogs and puppies that will be arriving in Maine and ready for adoption soon.

None of this would be possible without our wonderful volunteers and sponsors. The happy faces on kids, adults and wiggly, tail wagging dogs makes all the effort worthwhile. With your continued support, we will make 2019 even better than last year!

All dogs and puppies adopted through Rescue Charlie’s Friends are up to date on all their vaccinations, have been spayed or neutered and have a microchip so that if they are ever lost, they can be returned to their family.

DOG OF THE WEEK

This dog is

Topper (formerly Jude)

What a great dog!  Topper loves everybody – kids, adults – loves ’em all.  Great with other dogs. We think he’ll be great even with cats.  Not an aggressive bone in his handsome little body.  At first glance, Topper looks like a cute fox.

Topper is well socialized, quite familiar with the dog park and has lots of friends there. Topper is a Portuguese Podengo / Labrador mix.  He is a four month old male.

Topper is in Maine now and staying with a Foster.

Topper

Hi, My name is Topper. I’m was called “Jude” on the Rescue Charlie’s Friends website although I don’t think it really describes my playful and zany nature. It also says I’m a Portuguese Podengo and Lab mix—I just don’t think I have any Lab in me—you tell me!

I am about 3 months old and I am teething so I need to chew things to help my new teeth to come in so it is important for me to have chew toys. I am also working on my house training, and doing real well except for an occasional slip if my companion human (I call him “C H”) doesn’t get me out in time—it’s tough having a tiny bladder!

I am loving, energetic, and playful and I like people and other dogs and C H says I am “well socialized”. I am not sure about cats because I haven’t really been around them. C H is training me to come and also to sit, and says I’m learning fast but I still need to be on a leash or in my crate.

Speaking of crates, C H also says I am “crate trained”. I like to sleep and eat in my little crate house. If I get excited and bark too much (I am a good watch dog), he will put a blanket over my crate and that helps me to chill out.

I am looking for a loving and permanent home and in turn, I will be a loving and faithful companion.
What’s a Portuguese Podengo?

Chewbacca

Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd

Chewbacca was found abandoned in the Alabama woods. He was rescued and was staying with a Foster in Alabama. He escaped through a fence and three weeks later he came back. He was skin and bones, his eyes were infected and he was covered with fleas.

Since returning, he has received veterinary care and is gaining weight and returning to good health.

Please note – Chewbacca won’t be coming to Maine until early DECEMBER.

Goldfish Bunny

Goldfish is with a Foster in Alabama and will be in Maine, ready for adoption in early November.

Her Foster says that Goldfish is great with kids.  She is good with all the animals (chickens, turkeys, guineas, cats, kittens, dogs, horses and donkeys) but is not too fond of the goats.

She is kennel trained but is only in the kennel at night or if no one is home. She loves her stuffed animal and crinkle sounding toys.

Goldfish will bark when she needs to go out or to get attention.  A simple arm or hand movement will cause her to flinch and drop to the floor, indicating she may have a history of abuse.

Goldfish is a real sweetheart.  She loves to run and play!

Goldfish Bunny?  Really?  What kind of name is that?  Goldfish, OK. Bunny, OK.  But Goldfish Bunny?

Please adopt me so we can settle on a real name.  Hurry!

Daisy

Daisy and her brother were dumped in a rural Alabama shelter. Her brother was adopted but Daisy was not.

Why hasn’t anyone snatched Daisy up? She’s a GORGEOUS Boxer. She’s potty trained, spayed, GREAT with people, kids, dogs and even cats.
Daisy hasn’t gotten adopted because she has a large tumor on her leg.  The vet believes the tumor is cancerous and far too involved and complicated to remove.
Daisy just needs a place to live out the rest of her days in a loving, understanding environment.

rescue charlies friends dog rescue in maine
Daisy

Daisy is in a tough spot.  The tumor on her left rear leg is cancerous and is too involved to be removed surgically.  It doesn’t seem to be bothering her much or causing pain, at least not yet.  We don’t know how long she will last but this is very likely a hospice situation.

What people are saying

I adopted a puppy from Rescue Charlie’s Friends on June 2, 2018 named August. My thirteen year old dog had passed away the month before.

I renamed him. Bud Lite. Bud because he is my Buddy and Lite because he is the Lite of my life.

I am some what of a hermit, but Buddy gets me out walking everyday. We have met many wonderful people and other dogs on our walks.

He means everything to me.

PLEASE keep up the good work you are doing both for the dogs and the families that are fortunate enough to adopt them.

From Foster to Adopter

I have always been a dog person.
For as long as I can remember I have had a special bond with these four legged loves.
When my karma died I thought that my heart would rip in two. To me, and many other pet owners, a dog is very much a part of your family, another child. There is nothing like the love that a dog has for their humans.
For many years I have wanted another dog, but as we all know it’s a lot of work and I’ve got enough going on in my life, Ha!

Fostering has been wonderful, it helps teach my kids responsibility, it shows them the importance of volunteer work and helping other beings, we get to have puppies around, and we got to save all of these beautiful dogs who otherwise wouldn’t have it so great.

I would highly recommend it for anyone out there who is a dog lover. It’s hard, yes, because you do fall in love, but it also gives life so much meaning, and it’s such an amazing feeling to see these dogs go to a new special home after coming from not so great circumstances.

This dog right here came into our life by chance. We are going away and the rescue just needed help with her for the weekend so they asked us. From the moment she got into our car, something was different. There was an immediate bond with my oldest and when we took her home it quickly extended to everyone. It just felt like she was coming home. We were absolutely not thinking about getting another dog right now, but just like Hazel, we absolutely could not let her go. She just fit. Even Hazel is realizing that she has a new body. This poor sweet dog had a rough beginning, but we’re here to make sure that the rest of her life is a grand one! I am so thankful that this sweet soul chose us. ❤️
